Hey ! Rainy night tonight, Charlotte says, looking glumly out of the apartment window. She sighs, curling up on the couch and drawing a blanket over her knees. Looks like we won't get our D&D session this week. Sorry, I know you were looking forward to finally completing the purging of the Labyrinth of Klothar.
She looks over to the window pane, watching thick droplets of rain spatter against it as rivulets of water course crazily down it, misting and diffusing the orange glow of the old street lamp outside.
Sorry the storm caught you out like this, pal. She lifts a cup of sugary tea to her lips and blows on it before taking a sip. Still - there are worse places to be, right? I have hot drinks here and soooooo many 2 player games. She looks up at you, smiling, over the steam from her teacup, and your heart skips a beat.
How about a good old-fashioned game of Magic? She indicates a box containing four neatly separated decks of Magic the Gathering cards. I'll go easy on you, I promise. I won't use my angels deck. In fact, you can use it if you want.
She dips a hand into the box, sliding out a deck in a white box with a picture of a soaring angel on the cover and offering it to you. As you bend closer you catch the sweet citrus notes of her perfume, fresh as a summer breeze, and she smiles as you take the cards.
That's it. Give me a real challenge, she says, laughing. Come on. Pull a chair over and scoot up close to me. We'll have a game of Magic, drink some tea, keep warm, and then see if there are any other games we feel like playing to pass the time.
Charlotte's smile is total innocence. You feel your breath catch. She couldn't have meant anything by that... could she?
