You huddle around the bonfire with your fellow survivors. Today was a good day, all things considered: your group made good progress hiking across the post-apocalyptic wasteland, and only had to fight off one small party of roving bandits and a few errant zombies. Of course, most of the credit for the victory in battle lies with Alicia. She has not joined you at the fire, but chose to stand watch instead. You look over and see her at the camp perimeter, cradling her rifle and gazing out toward the horizon. Your heart aches as you notice the somber expression on her face. You wonder what thoughts and memories might occupy her as she broods silently. She has done so much for the members of this camp, who otherwise would be nearly helpless without her. She has patiently taught others how to find food and water, she has felled dangerous beasts with crack-shot precision, and one time she even wielded machete and axe in a desperate mêlée against midnight raiders. Yet you sense no pride in her demeanor, only grim resolve. Although Alicia is the indispensable backbone of the group, she has little will to lead. More and more, the group seems to be looking to you as a leader instead. Pondering this, you decide you ought to check on her before you go to bed. You doubt that she needs much in the way of support or advice from you, but it might help bolster the other survivors' confidence if you make a show of sharing her vigilance. You stand up and walk over to Alicia's post. You notice Alicia tense up as you come into earshot, but she relaxes when she sees it is you. She says, Honey. It's all quiet. Thanks for coming to check on me, but you should get some rest. Tomorrow will be another hard day.
